Pune RTO portal ‘hacked’, fitness certificates issued to 9 vehicles

The hacker used the login credentials of a woman motor vehicle inspector, said the police.

An unidentified person hacked the ‘Citizens Portal app’ of the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Pune, and issued fitness certificates to nine vehicles. The hacker used the login credentials of a woman motor vehicle inspector, said the police.

The motor vehicle inspector, 45, lodged an FIR in this case at the Bundgarden police station Friday.

As per the FIR, the incident took place between 2.53 pm and 6.19 pm on November 17, 2022.

The RTO issues fitness certificates to vehicles through a computerised system. For this purpose, motor vehicle inspectors at the RTO log into the Citizen’s Portal application in the morning on every working day.

The Pune RTO detected the breach during the verification process.

The police have identified the IP address of the computer device used by the accused for committing the crime. They have booked the IP address user under Sections 465 of the Indian Penal Code and various Sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Police inspector Ashvini Satpute is investigating the case.
