Celebrity fitness trainer Yasmin Karachiwala’s tips on fitness, wellness and busting diet myths

YK: The work of a protein shake is to give your body protein, not to lose it. It has nothing to do with weight loss. Yes, it’s convenient as you don’t have to chew or eat. We consume it to get the protein to work at the energy source.

Protein shakes do fill you up, if you have them first thing in the morning. They’re a great substitute for junk and in that sense they do force you to eat clean. However, your cravings are in control when every meal of yours is well-balanced—fibre, protein, good fats, carbohydrates, and minerals, you’ll prevent cravings.

VI: Any recommendations for protein shakes?

YK: I like vegan, plant-based proteins. I prefer the more natural proteins because the others can have a lot of chemicals in them. Ace Blend is a plant-based protein brand that has a whole lot of flavours.

VI: What is your take on this whole movement against carbohydrates?

YK: Carbs are very, very important to control your cravings. There are carbohydrates that are good and there are those that are not so good—let’s not term them as bad. For example, brown rice gives you fibre along with carbs, vegetables for that matter are rich in complex carbs. So it’s all about understanding them.

VI: What are the few common mistakes you see in your clients that you’d like to change—it could be from physical exercise to overburning?

YK: If I am making a client do an exercise a certain way, they will want to do it differently. According to them, it’s better. But, that’s because your body is not working in the way it’s meant to. It’s finding substitutes for where it likes to be. This is the most common thing, ‘I feel the burn better if I do it this way’. The thing is that it’s true because they’ve trained their body to do it the incorrect way for so long that the body doesn’t want to learn the correct way.

The second thing is people who want to do functional training in pilates. They’ve heard pilates is good for you and then they also want to burn and sweat all the time. You have to really explain to them that just because you aren’t feeling the same burn you would at the gym, doesn’t mean that it isn’t working. It works on a very cellular level. Plus, people also think that working out more is better than working out less—just because you finished five minutes before your hour is up, doesn’t mean your workout is less effective.
