Santa Barbara County Behavioral Wellness speaks on mental health care after the release of Tyre Nichols’ body camera video, mass shootings

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After the body camera video release of the Memphis police-involved death of Tyre Nichols and the recent mass shootings across the U.S., Santa Barbara County Behavioral Wellness reminds the community about the mental health resources available.

“It can leave people with behaviors such as trouble sleeping, irritability, difficulty concentrating, increased use of alcohol and tobacco, social isolation, and fear of those around us,” said Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness Public Information Officer Suzanne Grimmesey.

The department provided tips for self-care. This includes limiting exposure to the imagery on the media, especially for children, taking time for yourselves, getting outdoors, getting plenty of sleep, keeping routines and staying connected with others, talking about the event(s) and your reactions, and reaching out for support when needed.

News Channel 3-12 also compiled a list of resources in November of 2022. If you would like more information, click here.
