Texas woman dies of COVID-19 on Spirit flight diverted to Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Texas woman died of COVID-19 whereas onboard a Spirit Airlines flight that was diverted to Albuquerque in late July. According to The Washington Post, on the night of July 24, the flight left Las Vegas and was on its means to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

According to Stephanie Kitts, spokeswoman for the Albuquerque International Sunport, the flight had to be diverted to Albuquerque as a result of the woman turned unresponsive. Kitts states that the woman was lifeless by the point she arrived.

Spirit Airlines Director of Communications Erik Hofmeyer expressed honest condolences to the household and mates of the woman who handed away. Regarding the incident, Hofmeyer acknowledged that that the airline has protocols in place and that they adjust to all Centers For Disease Control and Prevention requests for info and that contract tracing is carried out by public health companies.

“Our Flight Attendants have in-depth training to respond to medical emergencies and utilize several resources, including communicating with our designated on-call medical professionals on the ground, using onboard medical kits and personal protective equipment, and receiving assistance from credentialed medical personnel traveling on the flight,” stated Hofmeyer in a press release.

While the woman has not been publicly recognized, the Dallas County Judge’s Office that originally disclosed her demise acknowledged that she was in her 30s and had an underlying medical situation. It wasn’t till later that Albuquerque airport managers realized that the woman had COVID-19 so the incident was handled as a typical medical diversion in accordance to Kitts. The woman was added to the Dallas County coronavirus death report on Sunday.

The Washington Post reviews that it’s unknown how many individuals have been on the flight or whether or not any of the passengers have been notified that they could have been uncovered to coronavirus. Dallas officers first reported that the woman died in Arizona earlier than confirming that she truly died in New Mexico.
