There were reports that thugs from Atalanta travelled to the city to join in the mayhem.
Footage appeared to show supporters attacking police.
In response 800 cops were deployed on the street while firefighters tackled the blazes that erupted.
Masked assailants were seen throwing chairs at vans and officers.
There were also reports of Frankfurt's team bus being targeted with missiles as it arrived for the match, which saw Napoli win 3-0 to progress in the Champions League.
