Let’s take a look at symptoms of baby teething and its remedies.
What is teething?
Teething is a natural process in which a baby’s first teeth, also known as primary teeth or milk teeth, emerge through the gums. “Teething is an important milestone in a baby’s development, and it usually occurs between 4 months of age to 3 years. As the teeth push through the gums, babies may experience discomfort and pain,” says Dr Shreya Dubey, Consultant Neonatology and Paediatrics, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram. Teething is a normal and necessary part of a baby’s development, but parents can help alleviate their baby’s discomfort by doing a few things.

Signs and symptoms that your baby is teething
Dr Dubey explains that some babies show no symptoms at all, while others exhibit classic symptoms such as:

* Irritability
* Excessive drooling
* Tendency to bite and chew almost anything.
* Have swollen and sensitive gums.
* Rubbing or pulling their ears, eyes and nose.
* A mild increase in body temperature (usually less than 38 degree celsius).
When the tooth finally emerges, their gums become red and sore. They may experience disrupted sleep patterns and an increase in bowel movements too. It is essential to note that these symptoms are normal and not a cause for alarm, but it is always advisable to visit your pediatrician if your baby looks unwell.

Here are some remedies to help soothe your baby’s teething pain:
1. Teething rings or teethers
Dr Dubey advises making use of baby teethers. These are toys designed to be chewed on, providing your baby with something to gnaw on to relieve the discomfort. They come in various types and sizes, including silicone or plastic rings, and some can be refrigerated or frozen for an added soothing effect.
2. Cold washcloth
A clean, damp washcloth that has been chilled in the refrigerator can provide immediate relief to your baby’s sore gums. You can also use a frozen washcloth, but make sure to wrap it in a thin cloth or towel to prevent any ice burns.
3. Soft-bristled toothbrush
A soft-bristled toothbrush can be used to gently massage your baby’s gums. This helps to ease the discomfort and improve circulation, which promotes healing.
4. Fruit and vegetables
Raw fruits and vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers and apples can be given to your baby, if older than 6 months, to bite and chew on. “They are safe and healthy and provide the necessary pressure that relieves the pain and itching in the gums,” says Dr Dubey. However, it is crucial to supervise your baby during this process to avoid choking hazards.

5. Teething gels and medications
Dr Dubey also suggests if your baby is experiencing severe pain, you can consider using teething gels or medications. However, it is essential to consult your pediatrician before administering any medication to your baby.
By using these remedies and medications, you can make the teething process more comfortable for your baby. Remember to keep a close eye on your baby’s symptoms and consult your pediatrician if necessary.
