Monsoon Skincare: Why you need to follow these essential tips as your skin becomes more prone to breakouts
Humidity during the monsoon promotes fungal and bacterial growth on the skin. Pay attention to areas prone to fungal infections, such as between the toes and skin recesses. Keep these areas clean, dry and apply antifungal powder or cream as recommended by a dermatologist, says Dr Shazia Zaidi, Consultant, Dermatology, Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida
As the monsoon arrives, it brings relief from the scorching summer heat and rejuvenates the environment. However, the humidity and dampness that come with the rains can pose challenges for our skin. Regardless of age, proper skincare during the monsoon is crucial to maintain a healthy and glowing skin. So, let’s explore effective skincare tips for all age groups:
1. Cleansing: During the monsoon, frequent cleansing becomes essential to remove excess oil, dirt and sweat. Use a mild cleanser suitable for your skin type and wash your face at least twice a day. This practice helps prevent clogged pores and acne breakouts. Avoid using harsh soaps as they can strip the skin of essential oils, leading to dryness.
2. Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation helps in removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Opt for a gentle exfoliator and limit the frequency to once or twice a week. Exfoliation promotes skin renewal, leaving it fresh and radiant. However, be cautious not to overdo it, as excessive exfoliation can cause skin irritation.

3. Hydration: Maintaining adequate hydration is crucial for all age groups, especially during the monsoon season. Drink plenty of water and include hydrating foods in your diet to keep your skin supple and moisturised. Use a lightweight, water-based moisturizer to prevent excessive oiliness without compromising hydration.
4. Sun Protection: Don’t be fooled by cloudy skies; harmful UV rays can still penetrate through and damage your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, even on cloudy days. This practice safeguards your skin from sunburns, premature ageing, and the risk of skin cancer. Reapply sunscreen every few hours, especially if you get wet in the rain.
5. Anti-Fungal Measures: Humidity during the monsoon season promotes fungal and bacterial growth on the skin. Pay attention to areas prone to fungal infections, such as between the toes, under the breasts and the groin area. Keep these areas clean, dry and apply antifungal powder or cream as recommended by a dermatologist.
6. Oil Control: Excessive oil production is a common concern during the monsoon, leading to acne and breakouts. Use oil-free or mattifying products to manage oiliness. Blotting papers or tissues can also come in handy to remove excess oil throughout the day without disturbing your makeup.
7. Waterproof Makeup: There are plenty of options for water-resistant makeup products that do not run should you get drenched. Keep your makeup light and minimal so that your skin can breathe.
8. Do not touch your face: Avoid touching your face frequently as it can transfer dirt and bacteria that can cause breakouts and allergies. Keep your hands clean and disinfected.
This is basic skincare hygiene but should you experience any persistent skin issues, consult a dermatologist.
