LONDON (AP) — The pilot of a fighter jet that crashed into the North Sea, off the coast of northern England, has been discovered dead, the U.S. Air Force stated Monday.

In an announcement hours after the crash, it stated “the pilot of the downed F-15C Eagle from the 48th Fighter Wing has been located, and confirmed deceased.”

It stated this is a “tragic loss” for the 48th Fighter wing group and despatched condolences to the pilot’s household.

The identify of the pilot is not going to be launched till all subsequent of kin notifications have been made.

Earlier, rescuers discovered the wreckage of the jet that was on a routine training mission from RAF Lakenheath when it crashed at 9:40 a.m. The trigger of the crash wasn’t instantly clear.

Britain’s coast guard situated wreckage from the downed fighter, and restoration efforts had been underway, the U.S. Air Force stated in an announcement.

Coast guard officers stated in an announcement that they obtained reviews the airplane went down 74 nautical miles off Flamborough Head on the Yorkshire coast.

A helicopter and lifeboats had been deployed.

“Other vessels nearby are heading to the area,” the coast guard stated in an announcement.

Lakenheath is a Royal Air Force base that hosts the U.S. Air Force’s 48th Fighter Wing, referred to as the Liberty Wing. The base is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of London.

The wing has greater than 4,500 active-duty navy members.
