What are ankle and wrist weights?

According to Utsav Agrawal, an advanced personal trainer, ankle and wrist weights are fitness accessories that can be strapped around your wrists or ankles to add extra resistance to your exercises and movements.

“They are typically made of fabric with pockets or pouches filled with weights such as sand or small metal bars. These weights are available in various sizes and weights — allowing you to adjust the level of resistance to suit your fitness level and workout goals,” he said.

Here are some benefits of ankle and wrist weights, as per the fitness expert:

*Increased resistance: Ankle and wrist weights add extra resistance to your exercises, which can help increase the intensity of your workouts and enhance muscle strength and endurance.

*Calorie burn: The added weight increases the effort required to perform movements, leading to a higher calorie burn during workouts.

*Muscle strength: Using ankle and wrist weights can help target specific muscle groups, leading to improved muscle strength and toning.

*Functional strength: These weights can mimic everyday movements, helping to improve your functional strength and making daily tasks easier.

However, the expert noted that certain individuals should avoid using ankle and wrist weights in their workouts.

“If you have joint problems or are recovering from an injury, using ankle and wrist weights can exacerbate your condition. People with cardiovascular issues should be cautious when using ankle and wrist weights during cardiovascular exercises as the added resistance could strain the heart. Pregnant individuals should avoid using ankle and wrist weights, especially during dynamic movements as this could impact balance and strain the core. Additionally, ankle and wrist weights are generally not recommended for children as their developing bodies might be more susceptible to strain and injury,” he said.

Adding to this, Utsav said that one should ensure that the weights fit comfortably and securely without restricting blood circulation or causing discomfort.

“Always consult a fitness professional or healthcare provider before incorporating ankle and wrist weights into your exercise routine, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns. They can provide personalised advice based on your individual circumstances,” he concluded.
