Urging that 5k to 7k steps is a good enough number, Dr Ashutosh Shukla – MD, FACP, medical advisor and senior director, Max Hospital, Gurugram said that one ought to walk briskly.
“The original idea for 10,000 steps a day came as a marketing campaign before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Scientific research says it is good for your health. However, even 5 to 7000 steps a day is good enough. It is more important for you to walk briskly,” said Dr Shukla. Agreed Varun Rattan, co-founder of The Body Science Academy, and said that one must invest in good rain gear. “A waterproof jacket, sturdy umbrella, and water-resistant shoes can make walking in the rain more comfortable. Don’t let the rain deter you. Consider it a fresh and different experience,” said Rattan.
However, considering staying active can be difficult during the monsoon season, here’s what can help.
*Utilise stairs for a cardiovascular workout by stair climbing. The number of steps you take can be considerably increased by going up and down stairs.
*During monsoon, you could use the gym or walk indoors or even walk in light rain.
*Exercise at home by performing exercises like jumping jacks, high knees, and standstill marching. “These exercises can help you cover more steps,” said Dr Shukla. Rattan added, “There are many exercises that can supplement your step count such as walking on a treadmill, aerobic workouts, and dance classes.”
*You can also walk around indoor spaces like shopping malls or museums.
*Try to incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine. For instance, if you’re on a phone call, pace around the room.
So, don’t let the monsoon season dampen your fitness goals. Use it as an opportunity to explore new ways of staying active.
