Stonewater Creek community celebrates new playground, outdoor fitness area

Stonewater Creek community in Millsboro hosted a grand opening ceremony June 3 for the dedication of its new all-abilities playground and outdoor fitness area, called the PlayFit.

At the event, organizers and residents unveiled a recognition sign honoring donors. This event was special because it came to fruition after a group of resident moms (a mixture of professionals and stay-at-home moms) did extensive research on why an all-abilities playground as well as an outdoor fitness area for active adults and those with limited mobility was needed in Stonewater Creek. The group presented the concept to the HOA board, along with the developer David G. Horsey and Sons Inc., and builder DR Horton, who are currently developing and building the last phase of Stonewater Creek. All agreed that this new amenity would be a great addition to the community. With the promise to do all the legwork and raise at least $50,000 toward the cost, the moms group worked alongside the developer’s team to design this new amenity meeting Americans with Disabilities Act specifications. With an aggressive marketing campaign, the PlayFit Planning Committee was able to raise $50,000 in just eight weeks.

The project’s business donors include the following: Sue Cain Realtor with Coldwell Banker, Indian River Golf Cars, Buckley’s Auto Care, John Ockasi Realtor, The Grog Shop, Artesian Water, Colors by Aletta Custom Interior Painting, Community Bank Delaware, R & L Irrigation Services, Insight Homes and Cucina Veloce Food Truck.

The entire project took just over two years from when the idea was initially presented to its installation. David G. Horsey and Sons Inc. donated a plot of land for the new amenity at the intersection of Beach Cove Drive and Hammerhead Drive.
